Default Stripped/rounded exhaust nut

I need some advice on how to get the nut off the stud on the rear jug. I have to remove it to remove my tranny but the nut rounded on me when I was trying to get it off. No I can't get a grip on it. What can I do to get it off?

That sucks....Those nuts aren't torqued that tight. It sounds cross-threaded, galled or otherwise seized. You might have to take the stud outta the head.

It probably isn't the lower nut, since you can get a box end wrench on it. I would guess it is the upper nut. I had a hard time getting the socket to fit over it. There wasn't enough clearance in the heat shield. I used a 1/4" ratchet set with a short 1/2" socket. I couldn't get on the nut with my 3/8" ratchet set. Which setup are you using?
The nut shouldn't be that tight. You may not be getting all the way on the nut. Can you see that the nut has been rounded or does it just feel that way?

It is the lower nut on the left side. There is enough clearance to get either a socket or a box end wrench on. The edges of the nut are rounded and even with the tool fully seated it is not turning. There is evidence of rust from the excess heat so I am pretty sure the nut seized on the stud.

use a 1/4" drive 6 point 1/2" socket. if the 1/2 still slips, go to a 12mm 6 point. just a hair smaller.

It's worth a shot. I bought a set off ebay last night. Will try it when they get here and see what happens I don't have 6 sided sockets to try with so this will have to do. I hope.

not being a smart a$$ or anything, but... using the incorrect tool is probably why this happened in the first place. just buy a cheap correct socket. like $ 2.00

+1 ! goto Auto Zone, Performance or any of the auto parts stores..... singles hanging on the rack- the six point will give you more flat contact area....
