I have a 98 Ultra Classic. I'm having a problem with my throttle responce after the bike warms up.
When I come to a stop or when I'm riding in town my engine light will come on and I have a very bad hesitation when I roll the throttle on. The light will go back off and the bike is fine. Sometimes at a stop the light will come on and the engine will idle at 2000 rpm. On 2 occations the bike died as I was pulling away from a stop. Both times it cranked over several time before re-start. The light does come on while riding at steady speeds (highway) but it doesn't seem to have any affect.
Sounds electrical in nature. I'd start by checking/cleaning battery and ground connections and starter connections. I'm not sure if your Evo has a crank positioning sensor but if it does it might be acting up.
Great advice but that didn't help. I don't know if my bike has a crank sensor but I have checked all of the wires & connections for everything that has a plug. I'm thinking it's a bad throttle pos. sensor but I don't have anyway of checking it to be sure.
Does anyone know how to pull the codes without using a laptop & the PROPER ($1000) HD program?
Why, oh why, did I sell my perfect running (carburated) 89 Ultra for a 98 (FI) POS.???
Well, I bit the bullet and took my bike to the local HD dealer. They diag. the problem as a bad engine temp sensor (located at the top of the head on the front cylinder. Said it would cost $200-225 for parts & labor.
Total cost $320.00. WOW!!!
Anyone got a good running (carb model) Ultra that they want to trade for a Fuel inj. Ultra?
$37 part and 20 minutes to install costs $320 at the dealer...that is why they are called the stealer! I replaced mine last night by getting info here to help diag and would be more than willing to help anyone save a few bucks! If anyone near me ever needs someone to turn the wrench for them I am very fair and love to work on bike and automobiles!
