Here is an update on the noise after 24000 miles and about a year of riding. The noise never got louder and in fact only exists for a short time at start up. The service department gave the motor a clean bill of health. I think it is from a dirtily lifter slow to pump. I listened to a few other 96 engines with about the same mileage and mine was much quieter than the others! I feel relieved!

About the engine temp, I solved that problem with three things, se fat shotz, the stage one air cleaner and a set of XEIDs. The exhaust temp is down to 290 / 320, the oil temp is down to 220 deg. Those were no brainier things to do, too bad I had to wait an entire year!

The oil getting eaten up, solved that problem too, just don’t try to ride in any gear lower than about 2600 rpm, this engine seems to like 2800 to 3200. The added accessories now seem to enhance the torque in just that range, so life is good! Lower rpm and the combination of an up hill road, a head wind or just grabbing too much throttle and the oil noticeably gets used up, about 2 to 4 oz for about a 350 mile ride. Other than too low rpm, the motor doesn’t seem to use any oil.

With all the Harley points from the accessories, I had enough to get an oil cooler. I will wait for the 25 k oil change and bolt that on. Hope it warms up by then, another couple of weeks and hopefully we will be back up another 10 degrees, it was 50 today, who needs an oil cooler now!

Temperture controlled. Jagg has them. Then you can forget about it. Besure to get the antirotation clip

Default Engine knock

[My 2005 Ultra had the same noise for 30,000 miles. Dealer did nothing so I replaced both cyls 1500 miles ago and she is quite a a mouse and running better. Cyl walls looked marked up but not a bad as you may think but piston slap does not take much. $450 for parts plus labor

Here is an update on the noise after 37000 miles and almost 2 years of riding. The supposed lifter / valve train noises have gone away.

I have improved performance by replacing the stock two to two collector / head pipe set up with the V/H dresser duals. Makes the Fatz Shots a bit louder, but not too noisy. This was done strictly to reduce the passenger’s heat on the right foot. However, the performance gain seemed to be the first thing we noticed. The torque range seemed to be increased a bit lower according to the Butt Seat Dyno. Motor tachs up a bit quicker and cruises at 2500 with less vibration. This is backwards from conventional wisdom about the collector improving low end torque. But the heat noticed by the passenger on the normal 2 to 3 hour stretches in 98 degree weather seems to be less. Goal achieved, happy passenger!

The oil getting eaten up below the 2800 to 3200 range seems to be a usage rate of only about ˝ quart every 2k miles now. A bigger problem seemed to be me just adding too much oil by keeping it topped off. I use more oil that way! With hauling around two of us all summer seemed to be an acceptable usage rate to me.

I had installed the oil cooler at the 25 k oil change. It warmed up alright since winter. Seems like the cooler it did is job. Latest measurement at air temps around 98 deg F, the oil temp stayed around 215 degrees Engine head temps around 250 deg front and 350 rear.

Recapping were this was when I started, oil was constantly around 265 deg and cylinder temps were around front 350 deg, rear 550 deg.

Moral of the story, you can significantly lower engine operating temperatures on the 96 inch engine successfully with the right selection of bolt on upgrades, all enabled by using the FL-XIED as fuel management!

Just bought a 10 fat bob with the 96. I am new to the harley engines and while runing i kept noticing a vibration on every gear. I couldnt figure out what gear the engine should be in. comming from a four speed, I thought that this well was how the 6 speeds worked. untill I asked a Harley tech. seems that I was shifting way to early. now the knocking and slapping is all I hear. is a faint knocking but noticeable. I have not measured the temperature of the engine but seems that it runs hot at the reat piston. well reading your post gives me a hunch that this is something I need to look in further. first thing I want to do is change the oil. I just got the bike 600 miles ago and is really geting to me to have to do some work on a bike that the dealer said it was certified.

Does an oil cooler not come stock? I have a 2010 Heritage? Living in hot Florida I could see needing this if it will help.

Some of the new models come with the oil cooler. I have a 2009 streetglide which did not. The oil cooler dropped the oil temp about 20 deg

Two more years and now at 97000 miles. The noise from the rear cylinder comes and goes with the addition of marvel mystery oil. My guess is a dirty lifter making the rocker noisy. A few months ago HD did a compression and leak down test reporting about 133 psi and less than 3% leak down. Still uses about 8 oz of oil every 500 or so miles. I was replacing the exhaust gaskets and could see the seals, rears valve seal is totally burned away, looks like a burned marshmallow! Fronts is still looking OK. Plugs look fine, not showing signs of oil or any contaminants. Still gets about 45 mpg with se suprtrapp slip on's and the original head pipe, se air cleaner and nightriders FL-XIED fuel enrichers. At around 45k I replaced the compensator with the se part, then at 45k wound up replacing the chain too. Next project is a new belt and both pulleys. Tooling up soon!
