Try spraying carb cleaner around the intake manifold, see if idle picks up, smooths out. You may have an intake leak. Be carefull not to spray it IN the intake or you will get a false reading. Can you get diag. codes from that year? Bad temp sensor or weak injector could also cause problems. How is it off idle, any popping or spitting? Hesitation?
