Default Fuel Shutoff valve problem??????

Hello , New to this forum and needing help......
My 00 FLSTF ( carb ) has left me stranded twice the last week. Here's a quick overview. Rode to work last week and all was fine. Went to leave the next a.m. and bike would not start. I was told to use a plastic screwdriver handle and rapp lightly on the fuel shutoff valve to get the diaphram to come loose as it probly was stuck closed, I did this and was back on the road. I road for 3 more days and it did it to me again. I was advised to rebuild the fuel s/o valve. I dont have a clear understanding of the system ...Does this sound right or is there something else I should try? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Yes, common problem. The fuel valve has a vacume diaphragm in it. When the engine stops, vacume disappears, and the valve shuts off. Over time, the rubber diaphragm gets sticky, and quits working. The valve can be rebuilt without too much difficulty. The service manual tells you how to R&R the valve. The rebuild kit comes with instructions.

Personally, I would just replace it with a Pingle. Used one on my '97WG for thousands of miles without any problems at all.

You can replace the valve with one that is not vacuum operated as bobcowan suggested. You can eliminate the vacuum feature on existing valve too. J&P sells a kit for doing it, but when I purchased the kit, it did not fit my valve. If you disassemble the stock valve, you can move the spring to the opposite side of the diaphram and then reassemble and plug the vacuum line. The spring will now be holding the valve open all the time and the vacuum feature has been bypassed.
