I have purchased a 2001 sportster 1200 xlc last year, with a custom job 2004 4.5 gallon gas tank put on it. This year I started noticing a gas leak on the left side of my tank by the petcock. I had found the leak in the tank right around the petcock had it welded, this fixed the problem for about a week. Now When I start it up for a while I get gas coming out the overflow tube and small spots on the ground on the left side but no visable drips coming from anywhere. Any help????? I also have replaced the gas cap, and it is not too full.
Sounds like the float is not closing completely... hence the overflow tube spitting fuel...
Drop the bowl and clean it out...
Exactly, you have an overflow tube running from the carb and it hangs down at frame level on the underside. Sounds like you just have some trash in the needle valve. Now, if all of that is clean, then you may have a pressure build up in the tank from the gas fumes. A vented gas cap does not mean it vents the tank. It only vents one direction (inward flow). But, if it just now started doing this that most likely is not the prob.
Thanks, I also just started noticing moisture again around the petcock and tube coming off from it. Would that still be the same problem? And so if my gas tank was still leaking that would not cause this?
