Default please help me understand

ok so i'm shopping for engine parts. But I guess I get confused cause people just use the terms interchangeably.

the engine has 3 parts right? the bottom, middle and top right?

what are the proper terms for these parts. in the picture the bottom is the black but what is it called?

What is the middle part called that’s painted in red?

i thought the heads were the very top of the engine. but I'm not sure?

What is the cylinder chamber? vs a barrel?

Ahh sorry for stupid questions but it got a bit confusing.

Top End can mean everything from the cases up including pistons, cylinders, heads and rockers, but sometimes used for the heads only and rocker assy and boxes.

The middle as you call it is not usually called by that name but is the cylinders and would include the pistons.

Cylinders are also called barrels or juggs.

The Chrome pieces (most likely chrome) on your engine is the 'rocker boxes'. These are similar to the valve covers on your car. In your pic... these were the U shaped pieces, and on a Twin Cam bike they are more square like boxes. (you showed a shovelhead)

The part underneath where the sparkplug screws into is the HEAD. This is the part with the valves, springs, and of course sparkplugs.

Beneath the heads is the cylinders, and as Dalton says, they are also called jugs or barrels. This is the part of the engine that the pistons ride up and down inside of.

The actual big piece under the cylinders is the crankcase. Also called the CASES. Harleys have a 2 piece crankcase where two halves bolt together. The actual crankshaft and cams fit inside of the cases.

I hope this helps you get a better understanding of the pieces.
