i have been having issues with my 03 sporty for some time now and just realized that the exhaust coming out of cyl 1 pipe is alot colder and weaker than that of cyl 2. after engine is warm i can grab the front muffler without a problem. could this be a sign of a major issue or am i just paranoid?
If the pipe is cool after it has been running...
Your engine is not fireing/running on that cylinder.
Check for spark first, then the plug, then check
the compression on that cylinder.
well the thing that bothers me is that the head on cylinder one is still getting just as hot as normal. also the engine sounds and acts like it is running well until ive been riding for about 45 min to 1hr, then it starts to backfire and dies. i just replaced the plugs, wires and coil about 30 miles ago, but i will double check that i am getting spark and then do a compression check.
You might want to check the crossover tube gasket for a leak on the front pipe. Don't know how much that would effect the temp but it could be bleeding off some of the exhaust.
Use an infrared thermometer. Ride the bike until it's fully warmed up. Then let it sit and idle for a few minutes to stabilize. I'de even run it at a fast idle, like 1500 rpm's, for about 4-5 minutes. Then check each head pipe about 6-10 inches from the head. The temps should be about the same. If not, there's a problem. A lean cylinder will be very hot.
