i ordered a set of woods directional roller lifters yesterdad 6-7-09...about 2 pm....came home from work today and a box from wood performance was on my porch...now that is fast...waitin on my p rods from smith bros and i will be ready to install....just had to brag on them...thanks Mr.woods
i was very surprised...was comparing them to a b lifter..definately some differences..when i spoke with smith bros they said i should have my p rods in about a week also.....how are you liking your set up..?
I think the Woods are a very good product and took out a bit of this noise for sure. Nothing like the B lifters internally either. NO piddle valves and all that 1903 stuff. More like a high tech 'morel' lifter.
The Smiths are nothing like SE Tapers and take more work to install. Damn fine looking STRONG pieces, though. NOTHING like wobble, nut breaking, SE Tapers, for sure. You will see! I have found 27 flats to work out best for me (with the Woods lifters). That is 4 1/2 turns. (Remember that THESE are 32 TPI and not pipe thread like the SEs ) That 4.5 is somewhere in the .130s on preload.
They ship with red locktite. If you do like directions... they are a BITCH to completely remove. I have found what makes ME comfortable is to red the bottoms and leave tops bare. Still hard to completely remove, but I no longer wanna set the bike on fire at 'those' times!!!

i was somewhat disappointed with the SE tapers myself..i broke two nuts on mine..was pissed.had to fish the halves out, they actually broke right in almost perfect halves,..didnt put that much pressure on them either.i think the directions,i like to read the directions first, said 4 turns..that is what mr.woods also told me on the phone..come income tax time im thinkin bout trying his cam recomendation..only problem is my bike runs pretty strong and gets 57 mpg..it was dynoed at 90 hp,105 tq,,,with stock heads .95 big bore w 203 se cams.thunderheader...i know that veries ,depending on the dyno, other variables..but anyways..i heard the smith bros p rods were a biotch to install but well worth the aggrivation..
I tried 5 turns. What that did is allow the lifter to bleed out overnight. The directions say 125 to 130. I tried 125 and still noisier that 130 was. Kinda like a B lifter with 4 (on tapers)turns and doing 150. You need to remember 4 turns on Smith is LESS than 4 turns on Tapers. 32 TPI -vs- 28 TPI
AND... that 4 turns hits the bottom side of Bobby's recommendations of 125 to 130. I think Woods lifters have 185 travel as opposed to 200 travel like a B lifter.
The 130 works out better for me. Its ONLY .005, but with the 32 TPI, that is easier to 'fine tune' than with the pipe thread on the SEs. There is no 'turn' mark like on Ses. I just count off flats. 24 flats is 4 turns.
Smith directions don't state so... but one needs the normal three wrenches to tighten em up.
