Default pinion gear breaking

Has anyone heard of the pinion gear snapping in half. We thought we had an electrical problem but discovered the cam wasn't turning so we opened the cam cover and the pinion gear fell out. I know we will have to a bottom end job again and I am thinking of putting a smaller cam in this time. I had a crane 314 with .600 lift and wiseco 11.0 to 1 pistons. Can anyone suggest what cam to go with the pistons I have or should I go to less compression pistons?
