With the help of some forum members here and on other boards, I've narrowed the problem down to the starter clutch. Now that I've done tha, how hard is it to replace? I've read through the service manual and it seems like a pretty straight forward bolt in procudure once the primary is removed.
I'd like to get this clutch done now to get through the rest of the riding season and buy a heavier duty, Ultima, Spyke, etc. starter later when I have time to take the whole thing apart.
Just asking. Thanks for any help.
I'll post this up in the General section also, just in case.
You have to pull the primary cover so you can remove the pinion gear, in order to pull the starter out. Once the starter is out, replacing the clutch assy is simple.
I have been told that the starter clutch that Terry COmponents sells is supposed to be MUCH better than the one HD sells. If you just install a good starter clutch, there should not really be a need to replace the starter later. Generally speaking, the HD starter is OK, the weak link is the clutch assy. I have also munched starter clutch in a Gen II High-Torque (high $$$) starter.
