Question Engine backfiring

Hi, I own a 1997 Dyna Convertible, my first HD. The engine is naturally cold-blooded, but yesterday I noticed a lot of popping and sputtering, especially when I hit fifth gear. A fellow rider suggested the negative battery cable might be loose, but are there other possibilities? Otherwise, bike rides great. Thanks.

My did that when slowing down off the highway. It was an exhaust leak that caused it.

Thanks. Haven't noticed that on decel (except for a rare occasion when I really back off), this was while accelerating.
