Default knocking engine

I could use some help with 97 Road King, stock 80 evo.The engine developed a knocking noise,I had an HD tech listen and he said possibly lifers or cam bearing,I have replaced the lifters and pushrods, made no difference, looked in the rocker boxes while turning the motor over and everything looked good, but while raising the bike with the plugs out and turning the rear wheel it seems to turn over very hard.I have drained the oil and found small metal filings on the drain plug and in the oil and filter.I have pulled the gearcase cover and the cam and bearings look great. The only thing I am not sure of is the oil pump drive gear is able to move back and forth on the shaft atleast an eighth of an inch, not sure what's normal there and service manual doesn't tell me. Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreiated. Thanks

If you have had metal flakes going through that engine....get the wallet out. The EVO filters the oil AFTER it leaves the engine, so you are seeing debris that has already passed through the innards. You may not see anything in the top end as the filter screen could have caught it. Pull the plug on top of the motor case and see what you find in the screen. Might as well go ahead and plan for a tear-down.

I don't know if Harley still offers their EVO recondition or not, but if they do, it could be the cheapest way out, or simply look for a salvaged engine out of a wreck. Even if you find something unrelated making the noise...like in the primary, I still would not trust it any longer if you have found what you said you found in the oil filter.....all that junk has been through the motor.

BUMMER!

Thats kind of what I was afraid of ,The lifter screen didn't have much in it,but I would suppose metal filings would be a bearingof some sort? Thanks for the reply.

I picked-up a low-mileage 97 Ultra back in 2000 (when my first TC crapped it's rear cam bearing and I had it fixed then dumped it off on somebody else) and the guy told me this 97 was box stock. I put some 10,000 miles on it and the inner cam bearing failed. As it turned out, the previous owner had installed an aftermarket cam, which was a no-no unless you replaced the Harley INA. So...I had scattered little bits of inner cam bearing cage and roller all through the engine. I decided to let my local HD Dealer do it as I knew the mechanic, and actually helped/watched him walk-through it all. We bored it, replaced all the bearings as well as the crank-pin and rods. I think the only parts of that motor that were left original were the cases, flywheels and the jugs, which were bored .050 over. I went ahead and put some SE heads on it...all for a price tag of around $3,500 as I recall. The guy I sold it to around 10,000 miles later is still on it and it runs real well. He now has around 45,000 on the rebuild without any issues.

So....I "been there and done that". Good Luck!
