Any ideas / suggestions, what may happen, if I TIG a plate in the middle in my Rush 2" baffle (creating a chamber), to guide exhaust from inside the baffle to outside an back inside while flow is going out (as on OEM muffler) ?. I have tried 1.5" baffle and its still way too loud, it actually got more annoying of increasing the high tune volume by penetrating through my ears. No matter what earplugs I am pushing into my ears and how deep.
I have OEM and Rush mufflers (came with the bike) but neither of them satisfies me. If my plan is NO WAY solution, do I have other option than going to Screaming Eagle Street Legal Mufflers?
I would like to have the pot pot sound from my 08 Nightster, but not over load decibels. I am already handsome enough to be notified on bike, dont need sound to get eyes on me
I posted about putting a sink drain cup in the inlet ends of my rush muffler with 1.75" baffles. I put them in and should be able to get a test ride in today when the roads dry out. It may be a similar effect to what you want to do.

The drain cup diameter stock was about the same size as the outside diameter of my 3.5 inch diameter rush mufflers. I used a pair of sheet metal shears and trimmed maybe an eigth inch max off around the edge lip. Removed the center peg in the cup which left a 1/2 inch hole int he center. Used a 3/8" drill bit to open up holes in the cup. They slid in and bottomed out on the part of the baffle where it reduces in diameter. I put a bead of hi-temp silicone on the area where the drain cup contacted the baffle, then smeared some more silicone around the edge where I did the trimming once the cup was installed. Let it dry. I was hoping to get rid of a fluttering sound I get on decel and possibly a side benefit of mellowing the sound a little. Went for a test ride this morning. I still get the fluttering, but I don't think it is as bad and over as much of an rpm range as before. The cups definitely made the sound mellower. I don't like real loud pipes. The true duals with rush 1.75" baffles were not real bad from my perspective but at times, especially when I got on the throttle they were a little loud. I thought the sound level was improved. It was tough to tell seat of the pants if they had any effect on power. I was noticing sort of a sneezing sound coming from the right side muffler on decel that wasn't there before. I will probably let it go like this for awhile to get a better feel and then maybe open up the holes in the cups a little more to see what happens. I got the cups at home depot for $1.99 each so it was real cheap.
Well, the sneezing sound turned out to be the drain cup on the right side rattling around. Took off the muffler and secured it better. Test ride to come when it stops raining.
Thanks for keeping posted. How many db would you estimate is the silencing effect. I have 1.5" baffles and to me they are extremely loud. OEM ones are extremely silent. I am looking for closer to OEM db but open sounded ones.
Tough to say exactly but I would guess 3 to 5 db. What I notice is when I twist the throttle there is less resonance in my ears and I don't have the ringing when I stop. It may be that it's knocking down some of the higher pitched noise. I might be interested in your 2" baffles if you want to sell them and they will fit my mufflers. I'm curious to see how they would sound on my bike and whether they might help with my fluttering sound issue. I'll send a PM with my email.
Tested, Very Nice sound indeed and respectable lower db, low end punchy torque is still there. Thanks. I think it would need TIG for permanent placement. Dont know how well the heat resistant silicone will last. Its totally hard as rock when dry.
When i re-installed the right side cup I used the metal sheers to make cuts along the sides of the cup. This bent little tabs outward that snugged the cup against the inside of the muffler. I then applied more hi-temp silicone. Also used a scuffy pad and small metal bristle brush to clean the inside of the muffler to get better adhesion. Haven't had a chance to test ride yet. Your tig idea is good, but I don't have one.
Neither do I have TIG; but there are lot of TIG garages here around, charges 10$ for that job, it just 2-4 joints / cup, but they dont want to have any heat resistant silicone on any parts....
