Actually, the explanation was such that with the taper you get a water hose noozle effect, ie flow increase from the taper from engine vacuum, going from large to smaller orffice which forces more fuel than with a straight walled jet, yet this also helps with the low to mid range throttle response. I just go with what they send now and it does work, just be sure and use their needle.
I installed that kit and did everything the directions said to do and the bike started right up and did not balk at all going throught the gears. I was amazed because it said to set the slow speed adjustment at 3. 5 turns which I did and it seemed to work fine, but don't know about the gas mileage. In order to get a finer tune should I turn the adjustment in 1/4 turn, go for a ride and do this until I see an impact then back it out a 1/4 turn. Will this method fine tune the gas mileage?
The slow speed is changed when you go to aftermarket pipes to help with decel backfire for the most part and will affect the initial throttle low speed idle circuits but after that unless you are deceling, with the throttle backed off to idle point, this circuit doesn't affect mileage or performance. Usually you back off the screw untill you get no backfire, or if you still get backfire with 4.0 turns then you have to go up in jet size. I believe TCSTD posted a diagram showing the different systems of the carb to rpm's and how they are affected.
