This may be normal but I never noticed it before. I started up my dyna to let it run for a bit. It hasn't been run since covered up for the winter. Now,my garage is a bit dark and as I was letting it idle I noticed that the pipes up near the heads were glowing red under the heat shields. It hand nit been running long, maybe 4-5 min. I'm not too concerned, just never noticed this before, but then again I don't usually just start my bike and stare at the exhaust pipes.
There are few reasons for that
Bike runs lean etc..
I would put a fan on the right side of your bike blowing air over them so they dont get hot . It is an air cooled bike. This also will help keep your motor stay cool. You dont want an air cool engine just sitting there at idle for long periods of time.

That's what I kinda figured. I don't usually start it during winter storage and don't let it run a long time. Have heard both sides of the argument about doing this. Honestly not sure which is better, leaving it covered with tender on it, or occassionaly starting it to get rid of moisture in engine. My garage is not heated.
A fan is a good idea if its gonna idle for more than a couple minutes.
As for starting or not starting in storage, you wont hurt your bike either way. If you choose to start it though, make sure you the oil before the riding season. Starting any engine, in hot or cold weather, creates condensation and it is deposited in your oil.
The condensation breaks down the oil and causes sludge. Oil needs to reach approx. 180 deg for an extended period of time (20-30 min) to evaporate this condensation.
