Sounds like you are getting a very good deal. I just put andrews 48h cams in myself with help of a good wrench friend, and it was 4 hrs just in the time for the cam plate breakdown and reassmble. That does count the time I spent breaking down exhaust system, seat, tank, bags, etc, etc, etc. My cams cost 300 and the gasket set was another 200..My tuner,PC V was 400. Let the tech do it and you have recourse then if something goes wrong. BYW, what cam did you pick? Andrews makes all the S&S cams as I understand it.

Yeah djl ... I think we're on the same page ... definitely paying retail if the kit is the same as the one you cited from American Classic ....

If you feel you're getting ripped off, then ride the VRod and keep checking dealerships and other indy's for a better price. Hell, you might luck out and get a break on the work. My gut feeling is you'll find the same price, give or take, from every indy you contact. Be glad he didn't bullshit you about needing some type of $400 high performance oil pump (Fueling) for the cam upgrade (and yes, I've heard it before).

Like it or not, with a cam installed, you're going to need some type of fuel management, whether it be a Power Commander III, which is probably the most universal for '99-'06 bikes, or a SERT. Typically, the tune will be included in the price he quoted. Probably a canned map with a little tweeking. For the price he's quoting, you're not going to get the full blown, Dynojet 250I run file sheet you can reduce, laminate, and pull out for bragging rights with friends after a few beers.

On the up side, once the work is done, you'll kick yourself in the *** for not doing it sooner.

Or, you could just get the cam chain tensioners replaced, and go about your merry way for another 30-50k miles.

If you did the tensioners right now... that would allow you to investigate if you wish to do this or not. Decisions made with your back to the wall usually aren't the best... at least for me they are not.

You have an 03 with 50k miles which works out to about 6k miles a year. Personally, I would just replace the tensioners as you will get anoth 6 -10 years just doing this without going to the full blown upgrade and save a whole wad of money. While in there, if you want, throw in the cams. Cams, replacement stock Tensioners, tuning system and basic dynotune - should run you in the range of $1k. If you stayed with the stock cams, cut that easily in half, probably less, as you would not need the tuner, tune, cams, etc. Save the money in either case. In another 6 -10 years, throw in another set of tensioners for a couple of hundred buck and be done with it. Now, if you are riding a lot more miles per year, say 15 -20k miles a year, then I would consider the gear drive upgrade. In doing so, your tech will need to check crank run-out to ensure that it is not excessive and cause either premature failure or a lot of running noise.
