Default Straight Pipe Problem 1200 Sporter

I ordered American Custom Straight pipes for my 2007 Sporter.
I had lots of popping and the idle revving at stop lights.

My HD dealer said I needed a "race pack" on any Fuel Injected bike, so it would not lean out and keep the pipes from dis coloring.
That's another $450 I did not plan on spending.

American Custom said this was true but would NOT refund my money.

AC baffles are useless on the Sporter pipes. The one bolt mount is impossible to get to for tightening, and the sound with their baffles is no different than my stock pipes. The baffles come lose in 100 miles.

Are the only choices:

1: going back to the stock pipes and stock sound and getting screwed out of the money I spent at American Custom.

2. Removing the baffles and spending $450 for the module.

I am open to suggestions.

Thanks

You may not need to spend the $450. for the tuner but, a simple stage 1 download that harley sells is $150. If you plan on changing your pipes often or do more engine upgrades/mods,spending the $450. might be the way to go. Each download will hit your wallet hard. You may want to check and see if your new pipes were instsalled correctly. Did the exhaust gaskets get changed? Did the exhaust get tightened at the head evenly? this could cause cold air getting sucked through the leak(s) and cause even more popping on decel.

Straight pipes are hard to tune even for carb bikes. While people like to use them they are designed mostly for high RPM use at a track. And old tuners trick you can try is to weld a round washer onto a bolt. Put a nut on the bolt so the washer ends up in the center of the pipe when you put the washer into the straight pipe. Then you will have to drill a hole in the exhaust and using a piece of wire from the outside pull the bolt with the welded washer into the pipe and pull the threaded portion out of the hole. Then put a nut on the threaded part with a lock washer. Score a line on the bottom of the bolt in line with the washer so you can see what position it is in before you install it.

What you have done is added a way to adjust the back pressure on the drag pipe. By turning the bolt/washer combination you can adjust the back pressure and hopefully solve a lot of the problems you are having. Do a search on line for tuning drag pipes and you should find a more detailed description of what I have described. It was done a lot in the old days. Hope this helps good luck.
