my light goes out, i start motor, it then comes back on for about 7 seconds them goes out for good. What does that mean?

That means you logged a fault code. It will either clear itself in 50 starts or you can clear it yourself. The DIY forum has an explanation how to do this. On mine I turn the on button on and then hold in the speedo button while turning the key to on. This will bring up the section that you need to check the codes.
If you aren't getting the blinking engine light while you are running, then you can clear the error code. If I were you I would find out what the code is before I clear it just to make sure that you don't have a problem showing up...

04 and later can read codes through odometer display.
You can read it on the earlier models as well using the a sequence of turning the ignition off and on, the counting the times the check engine light blinks. The service manual outlines this procedure.
I had that problem for awhile, found it to be a lose oil pump sensor wire, tightened it up and no more light.......it did the same thing as what your saying but, every now and then you'd see it for a split second while rolling.
