Ok, so my 97 wide glide is running lean. I checked the plugs today after riding for a month or so on new pipes. I have a stock motor, vance and hines straight shots. Stock Carb. My question is, should I do both jets, or just the pilot jet, or something else? Thanks.
Back in the day here in Pgh we used dynojet kits , follow the directions and I ran the 85 main jet and a 40 something wich came factory in the sportys back then witch isn't nessessary.
use a 45 slow (pilot) jet.
adjust the mixture screw for idle quality and slow speed driveability.
you could try is a N65C needle that was stock for an '88 Sporty and that's about all I would do on a stock 80" Evo.
most ppl jet their carbs waaaay to rich, with just pipes on a stock motor, you don't need to do much for it to be right, actually it may be very close with just turning the mixture screw out a half to 1 turn (from where it's at stock) with no other changes.
My 96 FXD with drag pipes liked the reversion cones and 48 primary jet and 180 main jet. Thru trial and error, I went thru the 45, 46, and settled on the 48 primary. It responds best with this setup. I can hear a slight softening of the exhaust note with the 185 main jet, but I'm not wanting to over-jet myself.
Just remember that each bike is different- and jeep an eye on your intake gaskets at the cylinders- just a slight air leak causes more grief than you'd ever imagine!
