Default Exhaust Temps

My bike is an '01 FLHR, stock headers, with Thunderheader slip ons...no engine mods.....why does the left (rear) exhaust run so much cooler than the right (front) pipe?? It actually blows cool air out before really warmed up...even then, it's not the same as the right. The bike runs fine......just don't understand the temp thing. When I got my belt replaced a couple of months ago, the mechanic at a HD dealership noticed the same thing and replaced the manifold gasket....but it is still cooler.???....

Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Wow, I feel like a genius!

The stock header system has a crossover behind the rear cylinder which will be very obvious when you go look at it. I would think that 80-90% of your exhaust gas comes out the right side pipe. You should also notice that the left pipe is A LOT cleaner. Sort of a 2 into 1 system. There are some technical discussions on the forum about scavenging, 2-1 vs true dual, etc, but I don't have the technical knowledge.

Now, I would be VERY concerned about an H-D "mechanic" who replaced a manifold gasket based on your description.

Yeah, that's what I was worried about.....the same Dealership failed to tighten the fork cap on my right fork after replacing front and rear rubber when I had the belt changed....How did I find that out you ask? Well, grasshopper, I was riding it home from the shop....noticed some weird feeling in the front end...then noticed some metal flying up near my floorboard.....then noticed the freaking fork cap hitting the deck as I pulled into a parking lot to check things out.....Yes, they rushed right out and replaced it and torqued it down....but that is THE LAST time I take my bike to those dudes.....that's what I get for being impatient......should have let my local smaller shop order the part......lesson learned.

Thanks for the feedback....the left side is definately cleaner......
