Florida has had a law on the books for 15+ years that it is illegal to change the exhaust on any motor vehicle, if the new exhaust is louder than the original. The rice burner cars with the exhaust that make them sound like super loud weed-whackers are everywhere and no one is ticketed for it. And as far as bikes go, all the cops down here (at least in South Florida) like cruisers - that hate crotch rockets- but they like cruisers and don't mess with those who ride them.

'81, that was 31 years ago, a lot has changed. The old " safety inspections" are ancient history in Colorado.

Bikes seem to be louder now. Everyone runs an aftermarket exhaust system. I actually think that the E.P.A. is responsible for that. My old '67 Sportster came stock with tapered mufflers. They looked like the new ones today but were a bit louder and sounded good. That bike came stock with an open back air cleaner like the aftermarket ones today. There was no real reason to "upgrade," The bikes ran very well stock, sounded good, and were quieter than the average bike today. Now Harleys are choked up and need an air cleaner, an exhaust system , and a tuner to run cool enough to ride, and to perform well. Again, you can ride anywhere, even in Denver, without a problem if you just use a little common sense.

I also find it unfortunate that a lot of people ride Harleys for all the wrong reasons today. I always loved to ride for the feeling I get, and the things I see. So many guys get Harleys to be seen nowadays. Loud pipes get them noticed and they rap them up a lot. It's a status symbol. These clowns couldn't have ridden prior to the Evo. They couldn't have or wouldn't have worked on their bikes so they'd have been out of luck. Back then these guys hung out at the disco and wore funny clothes to be noticed.

I asked a local sheriffs officer a couple years ago about noise laws on bikes. He stated there is already a law, but the officers have to be trained in using decibel meters in order to enforce it. So every officer would have to carry it with them, then be able to use it. County is just not ready to spend the money on enforcing these laws. But like others have said its usually the idiot that has to gun it at intersections or in residential areas that get the feathers ruffled and complaints rolling in

Was just at a HOG meeting last nite Where the statewide CHP information officer, safety officer, and a motor officer gave a presentation + Q&A. They are focusing on Loud bikes! They are responding to public and political pressure on them. Sorry guys, loud pipes **** folks off. I put epa legal fatshotz on.

#964 lol. Yep been trying to get out for awhile now. Want to go to Az. Wait till they come up with some kind of noise pollution/green environmentalist impact report. How the birds or ground squirrels are damaged by exhaust noise...
