Engine Knock
So I have been looking at some threads about engine knocks. and it seems some people think they are common and to be expected, and other say that the knock could destroy a motor.
I took my bike into the shop for a rear tire replacement, and the guys at the shop told me that my bike has a bad knock..
Now, this is a video I took of my bike earlier this spring, not thinking about the knock at all, totally unaware to it's existence really
and then this is a recent video taken last week after I rode my bike home, more focusing on quiet and listening to the knock
I still would like to take another video, as i think the first has the enrichener **** engaged while the second does not, and as idle speed and noise could be a factor (what do you guys think?)
the shop guys said take it easy, while my father thinks I should not even ride it.
I have this week decided to err on the side of caution and not ride the bike, I would like to take it to another shop and ask them if you think its worth it to chance on the road.
I have also been juggling with the idea of doing the tear apart myself vs having the shop do it. I would love the chance to tear apart a motor and learn everything i can. I just feel iffy doing it on my baby.
If you decide to try and address the noise on your own; get the factory service manual for your bike. Very easy to pull the rocker covers and take a look up top for anything obvious.
And ive read through the instructions, so I'm starting to mull the process over in my head.
even without a stethescope, It sounds like its lower and in the rear cyl, just from getting real close to my bike.
The mechanics also agreed with that, saying it sounds like its in the lower motor, and could be risers or cam, or other components that I'm not sure of.
But I'm 80% sure I have to go past just the top of the motor.
This being the case, would it be feasible to simply pull the whole motor out? or should i work on it while its in the bike.
Also, worries I have, which are not really precipitated by anything other than thinking about it
-Will I be able to notice the damage
-Will I need to replace all the seals, simple because I am taking it apart, or only if they are bad
has anyone actually taken apart one of these Evolution motors, Id be exctatic to talk to someone.
It also has the 1200 upgrade, so I dont know what parts may be different than the service manual, and if that will change the procedure.
I tend to overthink these kind of things, and leads to questions that I may not even have to address.. But I like to ask them anyway..
I must admit though that "some" tap tap noises are normal for a Harley with a lumpy cam.

The only way you are going to find the source is to start tearing the engine down but before you do that, do a compression test and see what the tells you. The noise could be valve train related, primary related, piston slap or a rod. You start from the top and work your way down and won't have to pull the engine (and transmission in a Sporty) unless the problem is crank related.
You have now mentioned that the engine has the 1200 upgrade. How many miles on the bike before and since the upgrade?
