Default Tips for Exhaust Work

I've got a cracked header on my 2000 FLHTCI, so need to replace it. I've never worked on exhaust but have read about a lot of bad experiences.

Any good tips out there before I get started to make the job easier? Thanks.

I'd just take it off and put on a set of V&H True Dual headpipes. You can get them from Eastern Performance for under 300 bucks delivered.

If not, taking off and puttingthe stock Dresser exhaust is a pain the first time you do it. After that, it is pretty easy.

Yeah, I'd like to go with true duals, but I'm really just starting out on this bike. It's basically stock with slip on exhausts (previous owner said their V&H, but don't have the V&H logo so I doubt it. Anyway, I need to add a PCIII and air cleaner, so for now need to keep costs down. I can get new stock headers pretty cheap on eBay, so for now I'll probably have to go that way.

Soak the bolts at the cylinder with PB blast or some other penetrating oil the day before you work on it. Clean the threads with a wire brush before loosening. A lot of people break off the stud in the cylinder and then your f**cked. When replacing, use copper thread ease for future removal. Replace gaskets as well, cheap insurance.
