Default Run Out Help

Cam tensioners are gone, (57,000 miles) on my 02 Dyna Low Rider I have .0031 run out. I'm being told or reading that I'm ok with putting in gear drive and don't put them in. Would like to go with the gear drive but don't want to go wrong here. What would happen if I did go gear, just a little noise?, the bike makes noise know that's why I have it. I'm looking at putting in the fueling Kit so every thing goes together, I'm not just pulling parts and putting them together. I stop at a HD dealer talked to a tec before I did the runout and he said he would put in gear drive if it was his bike. Could someone give me some help.

Welcome to the forum.

I have gear drive and I love it because I run a lot of miles. You can run it at .0031" too. The reason that you don't go higher on the run out is potential gear breakage, not noise. The noise is dictated by the lash between the gears and on mine is silent except at idle when you can definitely hear the "tick" of a slightly loose lash setting.

But consider the hydraulic chain tensioner upgrade too. Simpler install, new oil pump and a little less money out of your pocket.

Thanks I am looking at the HD upgrade, out of pocket is not a big deal. what is a big deal is not messing up the bike. My opinion is gear is better, my ride is mostly stock so its not like I'm going to twist the wheels off. I just like the idea of not worrying.

Here's the deal. You are already on the cusp of what is considered acceptable crank runout for gearndriven cams. Prior to 2007, .003" run out was the accepted service limit for warranty purposes. You may find that O/S or U/S gears will be required to achieve lash within Andrews spec but you won't know that until you set up the standard size gears.

The problem you need to consider is that if you set up gears and crank runout grows to, say .004", lash could tighten up, break a tooth or two and you have some bad juju to deal with. This would not be an issue with the SE cam plate upgrade. The thing you have working in your favor is that the '02 bottom end is the last year for the hot forged crank and the Timken crank bearing, pretty robust bottom end.

So, you pays yo money and takes yo chances!

After I did some thinking good or bad I put the cam plate back in and checked the run out again. With the cam plate in I had a .002 run out. That is coming from the outer most edge, wright or wrong but that is how the bike runs. So if the run out is at a .002 with the plate in how can that shaft with the gear and the cam with gear on it get any closer?

I changed to gear drive @.002 run out when There was 16,000 miles on bike. Ran great no noise. @ 65,000 miles started getting lots of noise from cam chest. Checked run out ,was @.006. I quess I could have switched back to chain and tensioners. Decieded to have Darkhorse take care of crank. Running smooth and Quiet now with gear drive.

I've got even money that it wasn't a 99 -02. Along with the hot forged crank in those models we've also got the super important (IMO) Timken Lefty bearing. ( I just passed 128,000 miles on mine...still running fine!)
