Default fixing/upgrades

bought this bike about 3.5 yrs ago .... with 97,000 on it.

I knew it had a slight "sound' when i got it .. the price was fantastic and it was exactly what i wanted ..

most said it was piston pin or rod knock... very very slight ... after riding for 3 seasons and 16,000 miles later ... it is was at least the rod ... final thing that happened was oil pump failure, ripe apart and found big play in the front rod

after much research i have come to realize that the crank may have been the issue that took out the oil pump.

what i found about this bike is pistons are stock, S&S gear drive cams 585g ( no odd wear on the gears ), stock cam plate, stock oil pump, ajustable push rods.

marelli fuel injection 2 port ..

this bike was flawless starting and running, cold/hot doesn't matter, kept in the neihborhood with the others, no starting/running issues what so ever.

so after calling and research the best at this point would be to go for the larger crank and bigger pistons, (welded crank) ... crank, pistons, rings and bored jugs about 1200.00

Feuling cam plate and oil pump.

i also will be using the stock heads.

I am only looking to get my bike back on the road, inexpensive and very drivable, reliable and streetable. do not need all the BS stuff.

when i was young i built a 69 Nova, 427, 396 heads, cast iron open plenum manifold, mild Fireball cam, carb with choke ( lol ), very streetable, hub caps and same size black wall tires all the way around, header w/exhaust, mufflers all the way to rear bumper.

comments welcome .....

With well over 100k miles, sounds as if you are doing the right thing. I have 585 cam in my current bike and it is great. Post pics when you are back on the road!

I'd lean in the direction of at least a perforamnce valve job, and bring that exhaust port out to that of the later TC size.
It'll have more power, and shed heat better as well.

Sounds like ya are gonna end up with a nice 103? I would upgrade to some better flowing 103 heads with compression releases.

remember i rode this bike with the 585's in it for 15,000 miles not knowing they were in it ... and it was fine, stock crank and pistons TC88, stock exhaust and no name brand slips ons ... after not riding for many years came in 2nd in the slow ride LOL missed 1st by inches ...

only thing i can say is that some of the gas I would get some ( little bit ) of ping,

the valve job thing ... since i have not disassembled the heads yet, that has not been desided.

what I have based this on is the price, the "upgrade" to bigger crank and pistons really cost me 0 extra ... new stock crank is about $900 and not welded ...

My 2008 S&S V107T came new with a 585 cam and 9.5:1 CR. Torque curve is flat and it rides like a steam engine - a wonderful thing! The T124 is now available, as of earlier this year, with 585 cams and 10.2:1 CR, which suggests that cam profile will give good results over a wide range of CRs! It doesn't need such a high CR as 10.5 to work just fine.

the thing the scares me the most is IF i would make any changes on the "breathing" of the bike i do not want to have to change/adjust the Fuel injection as i am VERY limited from what i have read on the Magnetti-Marelli EFI .... so i am being very careful cause of that ...

You shouldn't be scared old chap! Unfortunately, like many Harley 'things', MMI has a bad name, largely from frequently repeated internet myths. MMI is not as readily tuned as the later Delphi, but is not totally inflexible. In addition both Harley and S&S now offer a replaceable module for your MMI that has improved tunability. So there is hope and salvation out there!

its the money thing ...LOL ... it appears that most just do not want to understand the technology of the system ..having the ability to adjust the front and rear intake manifolds seperatly would be the best ....like on high end euro cars ...

i just want to fix the bottom end and ride !!!!!!!!
