Bill, I believe the stock size K&N 6 1/4 X 5 1/2 (tapered) X 2 1/4 will flow good up to 100/100 and is the stock K&N used in the stage 1 setup, but you're correct, more is usually better
On my previous WG, I went from the stock K&N in the stage 1 kit to the 1" taller zipper upgrade K&N and had to rejet it for better performance once I did it.
Bill, you are exactly correct on your statements, when I lost my breather when the bolts broke at the backing plate I had to hammer the stage one down just a little to get a good seal, I was in a hurry and didn't have time to do it correctly.
By the way I talked to Ness and they told me they had a problem a couple of years ago with bolt breakage, but have since then come out with new adapter bolt's that's supposed to not break, so all you guys that might have an older big sucker it's something to look at. If Mac goes with the stage II he will need a 8" diameter breather cover, I run the Ness 8" round breather cover, it's available in smooth or grooved, you can see them at the Ness sight or JP Cycles.
I wanted to add one other K&N filter for the big suckers or SE backing plates, it's a ultra high flow if you need that much, my friend runs this on his built 103, you have to put spacers in-between the breather cover and the outside of the filter. They are not cheap, but they do flow a huge amount of CFM.
