Is there any chance that the VB-Forums add-on could be used to identify the thread starter, to save scrolling all the way back to the first post in long threads?

There's already a "thread starter"...it's under the title of the thread. If that's what you mean.
No, I didn't explain myself too well - when viewing threads with multiple pages there no way of checking when the original poster responds within the thread - the only way to check is to go back to the first post/page.

The thread starter tag that I was referring to is on each of the posts further down a multi-page thread where the OP makes additional posts, he has the "thread starter" tag, so at least that way you don't have to go back out to the original post to confirm.
