The maximum size of your custom image is 500 by 250 pixels or 97.7 KB (whichever is smaller).
I uploaded 37kB 332x234 photo.

Do not forget to scroll all the way down and safe the changes. It might help to delete the qoute in your signature...

I did, obviously.
To be honest, I've been struggling with this issue since day one - I had just gave up once.
And I might very well do it again - it's not worth "taking the time and trying again" forever.
