I'm doing the first fork oil change on the FLS Slim and having removed the top fork tube bolts & seals I notice that the fork plugs have two flats.
All as expected & shown in the parts diagrams.
But I was expecting the top of the shroud bolts to be screwed up to the (outside) flats, to stop the tubes rotating when the top bolts are used to draw the tubes up into the top yoke before the bottom yoke clamp bolts are tightened.
But they aren't.
So, have Harley (yet again) used bolts that are too short, or am I over-analysing.
Oh, and how cool is it that the part number for the top seal goes right back to 1948!!!?
Hello old chap! You're not over-analysing, just too darned smart! I've only had my Glide with the same forks since 1990 and it never occurred to me that those top bolts would do what you describe. No they are not intended to do that, in fact they simply hold stuff to the outside of the top tree/yoke. In the case on my bike that includes the headlight nacelle, spot-lights bracket and windshield - quite enough for a couple of wee bolts to be getting on with!
I'm sure we can parts of your bike that go back earlier than '48! That was when these 41mm forks were first introduced and the perishers haven't upgraded them since.
