Default "04 Softail rear wheel spacers

Hi Group,
I took my rear wheel off and one of the spacers fell out. It has a small v shape cut in the very edge of one of the spacers--the other edge of the spacer did not have the small v cut in the edge. Anyone able to tell me whether the spacer with the small V in it should go toward the bearing or toward the frame of the bike?

Are you talking about one edge being beveled? If so, the beveled end goes toward the bearing.

Regards,

Bill

Thanks for your reply Bill. No, the spacer is not beveled on either edge but it has a small v cut into one edge only.

John,

I am not sure what the V would be. If you can post a picture maybe I can give you better info. I have my Wife's Heritage for reference, as well a a Shop Manual for the Softail. We should be able to get it figured out.

Regards,

Bill

Bill,
Many thanks for your help--I too have a shop manual but it doesn't mention anything about the V . Both edges are exactly the same (bexeled) except that the one edge has a v in it.
I looked closely at the spacer and could see how it had been installed by way of looking at marks made as the axle bolts were torqued--it left marks on the spacer so I can tell which side is which. Many thanks. BTW, the V side goes toward the bearing.

The same thing happened to me. I noticed the notch in the spacer and couldn’t figure out what it was there for either. I looked in my book and I asked my buddies and nobody knew why.
After looking at it closely, I decided the notch should go towards the bearing. I figured that because if it were there to engage into anything it would have to be the inner race of the bearing. What good would it do if it were facing outward. That was my only guess. I hope I’m right.
If you found out what it’s there for let me know.
