Default Sportster front end question

My friend has a 2000 sportster 1200. I was taking a look at it and it appears he has absolutely no damping on the forks. They seem to be nothing but springs.

So, how unusual is this? What would be the first step in fixing this problem? What should he be looking for?

Thanks for any advice.

doubt it....

I know we need to open the forks up for that, when we pull the forks, is there anything (other than changing the fork oil) that should be done?

Also, how do you change the fork oil on this bike? I've done it on some dirt bikes before where it involves "pumping" the fork leg to get all the oil out. Then, oil is replaced to a specific level in a fully compressed fork. Is it the same here? Finally... what weight fork oil?

If the seals are not leaking,I would just change the fluid first.I bet that stuff will look black.
Never done on a sporty but should be basic.
As far as the procedure, I know what I would do but you may want to search or post your question in the sportster forum.

I have an 09 xl and decided to change out the front springs to progressives. On draining the forks some really nasty oil came out. I used Bel Ray 15W and with the new springs it feels like a different bike. If it hasn't been done in 12 years I can't imagine how bad that fork oil looks. It only takes about a half hour to do everything. Kurt
