Fro the top, I got poly pro left over from Army days. Bulky, but very warm. For the bottoms, I wear long fleece bicycling pants (not the ones with the built-in pad, the ones designed to slip over the shorts). The pants are only about $10, are very thin, and very warm.

RE: long underwear
The WalMart version of UnderArmor top and bottoms works great, about 12 bucks for each piece. I've used them layered with fleece sweat shirt and sweat pants, jeans, leather jacket down to 12 degrees F riding.
Just came back from Dunhams sporting goods. I was going to buy some of those underarmor long johns and shirt. I thought they were a little high in price. Around a hundred dollars. I don't want to pay that much if they are not worth it and, don't do the job of keeping me a little warmer in the "spring" air. Anyone have any experience and knowledge of/or with them?
Went into a sport wear place to get underarmor and the gal there pointed me towards the Hot Chili's. I got those and they work great not to mention are cheaper.
