Okay Marty from www.thunderbirdmc.com just called again this morning and explained to me how not neccessary it was to put a fuel management system on my bike with new pipes. Some of just do so much research on these boards that you can eventually find enough good and bad about everything. In the last 2 years producers have to sell pipes that work with stock systems by law.Harley is just starting a marketing trend to make more money. He is welcome to your comments and arguments. This guy has been around bikes and like I said before he is close to top Harley people and Vance & Hines. He said all I need a an AC cleaner with my new pipes. He said come back in 50 miles and he will check it out and told me he is 99% sure it will be fine. He is a licensed Harley mechanic and does warranty work. He said if there is a problem he will fix it. He knows about all the PCIII problems and thinks the fuel management systems can be bogus. He says 14 on a dyno chart is optimal and that is what my bike will run at with only an air filter. Hope this is true. I know some of you will say no way. But for those who just sit back and read posts to get info I will soon let you know how all turns out next week.
It will still run good without it Drrandall. It is up to you. You can go without it and if you chnage your mind always upgrade later. No big deal. It seems to me that you don't want to get a fuel mgmt system right now. Don't and see how it is. It will most likely be fine. It might have a little more grunt with one, but if you never try the difference no biggee. I was shocked when I put the pcIII on my bike with the noticeable power difference, but I waited until I had the bike a year before doing that. I have to say the forums swayed my decision making process as they have done with most things Harley...
I disagree. They're alreadyrunning too lean in factory tune and if you free the breathing up even more with pipes and a low-restriction air cleaner it's going to run leaner yet.
But hell, whadda I know? I ain't no Harley mechanic.
The one thing that he did say that I liked was just try it. Bring it back in 50-100 miles. He will check everything and the spark plugs and make sure all is optimal. He said it will still run at 14.0 on a dyno which is perfect. The newer bikes will be fine. Maybe not the older ones. Hope he is right. I have had 3, 15 minute conversations with him and he said he would be more than happy to take my money for these things but why? Okay I am sure you are all sick of this topic by now.
Does he have the equipment to install a download?...... The 07 bikes run very lean, if you let more air into the motor (larger air cleaner) and more air out of the motor (pipes) and don't change the fuel to air ratio the bike will run even leaner than stock.. Not good for your motor. But please do whatever you want to, it's your bike. And PS the download will help cool the bike and it only cost $150.
I was at the dealership last night and was quizzing the three mechanics there who stayed after hours to talk to me. I told him I put on Vance and Hines pipes, and at the moment, left the stock air cleaner on (out of money). He said the popping in the pipes on deceleration is because it's now running slightly rich. Once I put the air cleaner on, it will be fine. He said all that is necessary would be a DT (stage 1) download. No need to put it on the dyno. He explained that I lost some torque on the low end and the DT will fix that.
It's not rocket science he said. If you want it perfect, put it on the dyno. If you want good solid perfermance, skip the PCIII and just do the DT. It will run fine.
He basically saved me $150 extra that I would have spent on the PCIII.
Let me say that again: The Harley guy talked me out of spending more of my money at the Harley dealership, because it was not absolutely necessary.

Beacuse you don't get this kind of response in the exhaust forum. Good to hear some of you are getting the same opinions. Looking forward to the check back with him to make sure everything is okay. The way they try to sell you these extra things is rediculous. The bike is already $20,000!
