Those apps are kinda cool. When I did an Iron Butt ride back in 2010 while I was in Arizona, I had several of my family members linked to it to watch my progress. It would update every few seconds and they could watch me running across from Sierra Vista, AZ to Paco, TX and back. With weather maps they had an idea of the weather I was getting into in the late afternoon as well as traffic congestion around El Paso, TX.
You give your wife your Apple ID and password, and she can track your location from anywhere using the Find My iPhone app and she can do it from another Apple device, a computer, and also in a browser on an Android device by just going to iCloud.com;
She can see where you are, in real time 30 seconds ago. All she has to do is refresh it for updated location whenever she wants it. This and ALL the aforementioned apps in this thread are at the mercy of a cellular signal or wifi. You have to have your iCloud, Cellular Data and the FMiP turned on. An advantage with FMiP is that, in the event you are out of a service area, or not found, FMiP will give her your last known location and when you were there.
Find My Friends works much the same way but you can share your location with several individuals who can see a live stream of -30 seconds ago movements of ALL participating users in a large scale map no matter where the users sharing this information are. Worldwide.
You can also utilize the Details tab in iMessages and while using SMS text messages by clicking it from your device within the text message and then Sharing Your Current Location. A live location will be noted on a map that is then sent to whomever you're texting within a text or iMessage.
