if you do your own wrenching, take a run through your toolbox and pull out what you need.

take what you know how to use on the side of the road, outside a tent or in the motel parking lot.

for some that is a rather full set, for others it is a cell phone and credit card.

the fact you are asking indicates you are more of the latter. that isn't a bad thing, your packing just got easier and lighter.

First, start at the bottom: your tires. Put some http://www.ride-on.com in your tires. They both balance and seal better than that green slime chit. Next; extra fuel; two liters, in two one liter bottles

Then an set of both allen and torx keys… http://www.lowes.com/pd_498873-86580...7C1&facetInfo=
Seems like a lot, but it isn't. Oh, and don't forget 3/8 or 1/4 sockets and a ratchet.. and a Gerber multi-tool … a pair of electrical scissors

a 5 foot length of 1" wide Velcro; a headlamp and/or flashlight

hand sanitizer, and butt-wipes http://www.preparationh.com/products/medicated-portable-wipes. And sometimes, 1 quart oil and hand-towel. Extra fuzes are already carried in your fuze block. Some of this for the windshield and face-mask http://www.ebay.com/itm/All-Kleer-Motorcycle-Windshield-and-Visor-Cleaner-8-oz-Bottles/191503080716?_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D28773%26meid%3De18e6c5b479841529d8b6b54a4b1dd4f%26pid%3D100005%26rk%3D4%26rkt%3D6%26sd%3D201101330190&rt=ncCash and Amex with Allstate taking care of any roadside assistance… (I think that should about cover it; and yes, it does take up all my swing arm tool-bag and a bit more in the saddlebags (x-tra fuel, rope, oil, and fix-a-flat). But when I go 'for a ride' it's for more than a week… at least..

Most of my riding is cross country touring. The credit card and AAA/CAA tip is the best. But I also carry a few nylon tie straps, small vise grip, 10" and 8" adjustable wrench, multi screw driver, and the folding multi-tool that came with my bike. The folding tool has the allen and torx bits I may need to tighten a loose bolt on the road.

I have had a few minor bolts come loose on my trips. The simple tool kit I carry allowed me to do a quick repair till I can get to a dealer on my route. I have yet to be charged by a dealer to get someone to pull the offending bolts and add a drop of blue loctite for my peace of mind.

If I need anything more than the Leatherman and small crescent wrench I carry at all times, I'll either be hiking or waving someone over...
Haven't been stranded yet, in the 6 years I've owned this bike. As a general rule, you're always within at least 10 kilometers of SOMEthing if you are on a paved road in Japan...
