Is it me or
I thought I was going to have to sell my Slim, so I looked at local dealers to see what they priced any of their used Slims at. I compared the year and the mileage and if they were bone stock or had anything added. Then I went on to other sites for selling motorcycles and compared what I had to what private sellers had. I basically averaged out what I saw and put the price of my bike right in the middle.
Wouldn't you know that every single person that contacted me on the bike tried to low ball me. I have $2000.00 custom wheels on my Slim. Do I think that should be included in the price? Not directly, but I think that it should be considered when a potential buyer tells me that my Slim is exactly what they want as far as looks go(meaning the wheels). I just told them to buy the more expensive used stock one at the dealer and then buy the wheels after. It makes no sense. People do not want to buy fairly. So, you can say that people sell their bikes at unreasonable prices(and yes, that is true), but I have experienced people looking for unreasonable prices when buying.
Regardless, I held off from giving my bike away and, as it turns out, I didn't have to sell it after all.

Make sure it is detailed before ringing the doorbell.
And top off the tank with 93 grade.
Cash, not check or money order.
No tire tracks on my driveway.
I was looking to purchase a 2010 limited 16k miles guy wanted $18k and didn't want to budge a bit at first. Then he reconsider and said would take $17.5k for it. In the mean time I found a 2014 w 900 miles for $20.5k
MrsBarlow, retail on late 90s bikes is still around $7000 so same theory, they ask KBB retail. You have to remember there were probably twice as many Harleys made in 2004 as there were in 1994.
Look at earlier models, people aren't as crazy on price and the 00-02 engines are better anyway.
Here's a few Deuces under $7k:

You're gonna pay more for a soft ail custom (FXSTC). They were not made from 2000-2005. But they are still out there for under $10k.
Here's an 08 FXSTC for less than they want for the 04.

Or how about a 2012 FLS converted to look like a Train for $9k?

They are out there, just maybe not in your neighborhood.
There is a low mileage one near me, an 01, has not been started in 3 or 4 years. He is asking 7,500, my last offer was 6,500. Which was higher then I wanted to go for a bike that has not been started. Saturday he called me and offered it to me for 7k and said another guy was coming to get it for 7 but I had first shot and I had to get there. I did not bite, the bike is still not sold.......Some guys are just unrealistic
Just like the guys that do not need to sell, I do not need to buy, I am already riding

IF it sells, he wins. If it does NOT sell, he gets to continue riding his bike. Makes sense.
It's the guy that HAS to sell his bike that will take the lower price. Always been this way.
As far as the OP. If the market is the price you want to pay...why not buy one of those?
As for the fuel injection question, I prefer it, its more reliable and theres a reason that every bike has it now.
If your thinking its just something else to go wrong, you should be driving a tin lizzie

Just because a person can buy a similar year model bike that's been thrashed to death, and has ten time the mileage for a grand less than mine doesn't mean I have to ask the same money. If someone wants a $3500 Sportster, they should go buy it.....then spend a bunch more to make ride-able and reliable.
I reckon what bugs me the most is someone asking, without even seeing the bike, "Would you take (some ridiculously low ball offer) for it?"
On your fuel injection comment..... I'll just disagree, and it's simply a personal preference. Probably age based since I'm into geezerhood. I prefer a carb'd bike. If I could easily convert my two FI bikes to carbs, I would do it without hesitation. And every bike has it now because of emissions regulations, like Nextin Line said..

The Best of Harley-Davidson for Lifelong Riders
Super clean and looks great. Got it for $3,500. Tax, license and title added $161.

Then I found an 05 Deluxe with 8,800 miles that looked like it just came off the show room floor. Almost $10K in accessories. Price? $9,500.
