I used to use regular old silicon spray on the motor paint. I picked up a can of HD black engine detail spray and used it a couple of weeks ago. I will go back to the silicon spray for 1/3 the price of the HD stuff when it runs out.
On the painted surface, just spray it on. If you get it on the chrome just wipe it down.

I use CD2 engine detailer. Shines the black area pretty good. Autozone sells it for few bucks.

Yep....I use "No touch tire cleaner" from the dollar store. Same silicone as S100 and cheap. Spray on a warm engine. Use as much as you need so it's dripping off. A tooth brush will help if it's extra dirty as well as several applications. It's silicone, so it's good for hoses and everything. This tip was given to me from a guy who was into the show bike thing and he won nearly every show he entered and was super picky.

I use Pig Spit. I do not worry about taping the chrome off, I just wipe any that got on there, but it works on chrome also. It makes your engine look new. I even had a couple of spots where I had dripped some liquid wax on it and I could not get it off, Pig Spit did.

Used PAM kitchen spray before with good results. Leaves black engine paint looking new and it's not effected by heat.

Blasts with the hose, and Pig Spit.

Have gone through several cans of S100, and a few cans of Pig Spit....I can compare the two, and Pig Spit lasts much longer. You'll find yourself reaching to re-spray with S100 much sooner..it doesn't last as long on there.

Pig Spit can cost a little more, but it lasts much longer so you use much less of it each season.

For that initial first cleaning, I blast mine with any engine degreaser..or more often....a big can of carb cleaner. And then hose it off well.
