thanks for your replys...using a Clymer manual showing ets on left side of cylinder behind horn..actually is on top of cylinder..finally got this 98 ultra in 09,felt like a rolling sofa.all this ecm and sensor stuff makes me think of rolling out my 78 fxe that never gave me an issue I couldn't deal with ...guess theres always a trade off ,trying to catch up ...been told this ets failure results from sitting for a couple months!! can this actually be true? had ankle surgery and that's the longest its sat since I owned it
The ETS failure has nothing to do with the bike sitting around for a couple months. It just happens to be a high failure item. I've replaced mine 3 times. They have been lasting about 20,000 miles before going bad. The fault code is 14. Very easy to replace. DON"T take your tank off when doing the job. Just remove the bolts, lift it up, and hold the tank up with a piece of wood, rag, etc. Everything else is easy. Use a flat blade screwdriver to gently pry the locking clip off the sensor down in the cylinder head.
The part is readily available from any online HD parts dealer and also direct from your local dealership. Expect to pay from $75-$125 for one. I keep a spare in my shop.
Thanks for your reply Carl..used a dremel and cut off the top 1" of a 3/4"deep well socket ,got the sensor out...ohms out at 2.75 at 75 degree F...cant find specs on this, just trying to verify problem b-4 handing over $110.00 to stealer...you happen to know??? Sounds like I should get 2 of these!! Thanks again...Joe
The spec for the sensor is probably in the manual but if you pull a code 14, that ETS is toast so go ahead and replace it. See if you can find one online for $75 with free shipping for orders over $100. I've paid that much for them.
You could have gotten away without cutting that socket if it was 3/8" drive. Drop the socket in without the ratchet, then attach the ratchet part way, loosen, remove ratchet, then remove the socket. It's tight but do-able. You'll be in there again.
