The Coronado Trail in eastern Arizona, also known as the Devil's Highway. State Route 191 (used to be SR 666, hence the name). It's an old forest road that is paved and runs from Clifton, AZ. to Alpine AZ with elevations from 3,000 to 9,200 feet and lots of turns for about 90 miles. Running it from south to north places you in the White Mountains (Springerville, Eager, Show Low) in the afternoon where it is much cooler than the Phoenix area on those 100+ degree days. The road has very little traffic since the faster route is on the 180 through New Mexico, which is also a nice ride but mostly sweepers instead of twisties.
The only problem is it is at least a 12 hour loop from Phoenix and about 550 miles round trip, with a lot of two lane straight roads getting there and back, so there's only a few of us that do it regularly.
Ft Davis loop is good, but next time you are out here in west Texas, ride FM 170 (River Road) between Presidio and Terlingua. Just don't ride it between mid May thru mid September.
Yeah this. Wife and I just got back from Big Bend. It's all awesome. Just do it.
Sorry, but nothing beats Europe. Passo del Stelvio (Italy) is an amazingly challenging ride. Switzerland is all awesome rides, but the San Bernerdino Pass, Nurefen Pass and Grimsel Pass all stand out. In France the Pyrenees as you go into Switzerland are cool, especially Cul du Turini which include sections of the Tour de France route. In Austria the Grossglockner is a must do.
Put simply, nothing beats beating about the alpine areas of Europe. Although the Tonkinese Alps in northern Vietnam, on one of those 175cc Minsk's, just bumbling about getting lost and staying in tiny villages, is an experience to cherish.
Washington SR-20 or otherwise known as the North Cascade Highway. Riding over the pass to the little town of Winthrop for the best ice cream around is one of my favorite rides every year.
This. And continuing on Hwy 20 eastbound over Sherman Pass and down into Kettle Falls is an equally good stretch as well. Very little cage traffic through a great section of curvy highway two-lanes, forest, and mountain scenery.
This is a nice one for us. Round trip about 200km / 125miles so a few hours on the back roads but not too long for the OL to moan or get bored.
Back roads and forests all the way then back into Prague for a coffee before home.
If ever any of you are visiting CZ then Melnik is a good day out.
Best bit...there was a local police car parked up and we went and asked if it was ok to rude onto the pedestrian part of the square. He said it was fine....but wait 30 seconds and he would go park somewhere else so the squad car wasnt in the shot.
