Default Maintenance Timetable

This was inadvertently brought up in another thread and rather than detract from the OP's topic in that thread, figured I'd bring it up here. Last year when I bought my '14 Slim I had just retired and figured putting mileage on was certainly not going to be an issue. Well 2 months later a friend called with a job offer he knew I couldn't resist and just like that I was back to working full time. That being the case I only had a chance to log about 2.5K miles on the bike (and before we start the cajoling be advised that for me that used to constitute a low-mileage trip, certainly not a year), and that brought up a question. At this pace I would only need to change fluids every 2 years (I have not seen a recommendation from HD regarding time, only mileage). I have never left oil in a vehicle, synthetic or otherwise for more than about 6 months, but I have never put so few miles on a vehicle either. So the question is, how long would you leave your fluids in before you changed based on time rather than mileage?

Your working, fluids are cheap insurance.
If your not logging the miles then at least once a year is a good bet for engine oil, tranny and primary could go longer

I'd likely change engine oil once a year, probably just before winter storage.
For no particular reason other than my comfort with leaving the oil in longer.
I agree with John MN, transmission or primary I'd not be as worried about.

Every non-Harley bike I've owned suggests 1 year for engine oil.

I should add that the primary and transmission use the same oil as the transmission since it is a 1 piece design.

I was thinking a year also, unless someone had some definitive reason as to why that interval could be longer. As far as this "winter storage", I'm in Louisiana, here winter is more properly described as prime riding season.

The way I see it, It won't be getting cold anytime soon where you are. Your oil still has a ways to go. Oils today have plenty of additives to neatralise any acids in the oil, and condensation shouldn't be a problem. I would let it go up to at least a year. Fill the gas tank and put some stabil in the gas. A battery tender wouldn't hurt. Nothing sucks more then getting ready for a ride and having a dead battery.,,

"sell it"

Now here's a clever idea, just sell the old fluids, I had no idea there was a market for old oil in consumer commodity volume. For a second there I almost thought this poster had put up an intentional douchebag comment, glad I thought first before responding.

huh? 1K, and every 5K afterwards. Worry more about that gas sittin in your tank over long periods.
