Default shifting problem

Backed the bike out of the driveway this afternoon and noticed that the shifter felt funny. I shifted into 1st and noticed that the shifter didn't return to the neutral position. Shifted to 2d and had to push the toe shifter down with my foot to shift to 3rd. Unfortunately, I need to ride the bike tonight as my son must use my car to get to school (I'm refereeing a High School soccer game an hour away). The stealer can't see me until Friday.

Can any of you wrenches out there help me out. What the heck happened? Is the linkage bent? Did I take a pebble in the linkage somewhere? Is this an easy fix or PITA? The stealer said that the bike should not be ridden today (yet it's o.k. to ride it to the shop on Friday!). Is he right??

Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

I gather what the dealer is trying to tell you is that until said problem can be diagnosed, any riding should be kept to a bare minimum; i.e. to the dealer at most. Better to err on the side of caution as opposed to potentially making an existing problem even worse by extended riding. Just my take. Good luck finding the problem and getting it fixed. Hope it's nothing serious.

I suspect the shifter return spring but don't know whether I can do more damage by trying to ride it as is. Dammit, if it weren't for bad luck, I'd have no luck at all.

On my GW, it was some chrome that had worked loose and was rubbing against the linkage. As soon as I found and fixed that, the shifting returned to normal.

Me being curious like I am, I would disconnect the shifter linkage at the rear where it ties to the trans and make sure the linkage and foot controls rotate freely.

Once you do that you know if it is something simple or a bit more complicated.

If you are like me, the hard part is getting my fat head above the trans lever to eyeball it. Use a mirror and flashlight if needed.

It may be debris, rocks, mud, or other grunge around that lever. If so, that should be a quick fix. If that all looks good and moves freely then you are looking at cracking the tranny. []

Shift lever loose on the shaft maybe? Seen it more than once, the bolt gets loose and the lever moves on the shaft.

Chances are IF nothing outside is binding then the shifter shaft spring may be bad, which is not too common.

Check everything from the foot shifter back to the trans for binding.
My linkage at the foot shifter or the foot shifter itselfsometimes gets lazy because of the elements, rain, road dirt/grime etc. Some good penetrating oil should free things up.
