Default Odometer LCD question

Greetings: 2007 Street Bob, 50,000 miles. My odometer is getting very hard to read. The whole thing is darkening I guess due to sun exposure. I checked the parts microfiche and they don't offer a replacement odometer only, you have to get an entire new speedometer.

Has anyone come up with a solution for this problem other than replacing the entire speedo?

Thanks.

Nope. Just buy a new speedometer. They're not all that expensive.

I guess that's all relative. $275 retail from HD, about $230 from internet discounters. I've never had any good experience with aftermarket speedos, they've all been junk.

Yeah, pick one up from Surdyke or Boardtracker HD.

Lots of folks here have used Dakota gauges and haven't heard anybody call them junk. They all seem to be very happy with the company's products.

Sounds reasonable to me.

How would you take your unit apart if you were able to get a new LCD? I'm trying to figure out how to take mine apart so I can clean the inside of the glass.

Most speedometers are made to be tamper resistant. That's so you can't monkey around and reset the mileage. Good luck in taking it apart and then getting it back together again!

Ah, good point. I see the reasoning now behind the bonded case.

I like mine from HD. Haven't had any problems with it, but haven't had it too awful long. What about picking up another stock unit? Probably quite a few of them running around with all the aftermarket ones people install. Just don't know about the odometer on them. Will it display their reading or yours?

Just say the part about taking them apart question. I do not know how but somebody does take them apart to change the colors on them.
