hi guys... can anybody please point me in the right direction for the best deal on rear belt and pulleys for 2006 1450 flhri roadking or is converting to chain possible and a good option? I realise shipping might be expensive as i'm in the uk but got to be way cheaper than dealership over here also does anybody know of a download workshop manual anywhere.... cheers
Sadly the dealer is the best place to get a belt , I am unsure of pulleys. They are very expensive but they last a long time if you keep them clean.
Converting to chain is an option, but most guys like the belt better as far as maintenance. Some convert to chain for high performance mods.
A belt should last 100k miles without issue, but age is also a factor.
Converting to a chain is done for two reasons.
Number one, to let a bike look older and cooler than it is with a modern belt (belts are only since 20 years or so on Harleys, before they were all chain driven)
Number two, because of the extreme torque to be transferred to the rear wheel. Although belts are extremely strong for some reasons people prefer chains as a 'fail safe' idea.
A chain will last a maximum of 25,000 kms, depending on your style of riding. Besides, a chain need constant greasing because it consists of hundreds of tiny bearings between the shackles. And when renewing a chain you need to renew the sprocket wheels as well, otherwise your chain will last less than 2000 kms.
So, if there is no obvious and clear reason the belt of Harley Davidson is after the direct cardan shaft (BMW, MV Augusta, MotoGuzzi) the best solution in driving a rear wheel. With the best life time, the less vibrations (even less than a shaft driven bike) from the engine to the rear wheel. The most reliable solution also for lining..So, do what you like but be aware of the few pro and many cons of chain drives.
