Ok, got to work this morning and noticed this. Never really messed with forks so I'm unsure how it happened or how to fix it. My bigger question is, am I ok to ride it home? Secondly if I just loosen pinch bolts on upper and lower trees can I just "slide" this back?
That certainly requires attention. Looks to me that the fork cap somehow became unthreaded from the fork tube. I would check the pinch bolts on the other side too thinking that they have backed out a bit. Either that the threads could be stripped out. Don't know if you can get away with loosening the top and bottom pinch bolts on one side without taking the weight off the wheel. I would try the top first and see if the cap drops out.
Personally I wouldn't ride it until I got that fixed.
Looks like the fork is almost all the way out of the top tree - correct? If so - NO! Do not ride as is.
If you do slide the tubes up into the tree, be sure you have some help because once you loosen those pinch bolts the whole bike might slide down too far from it's own weight. Best to use a lift of some sort.
if the top tree is solid, it's coming unscrewed from the cap holding the spring in. loosen pinch bolt and turn it in to tighten. also look for a broken pinch bolt which is a common thing. this could be tighten up right on the spot, but it would be agood idea to get the bike up in the air and check it over good. your life depends on it.

Thanks, yeah top tree is solid. I'll get on this..... thanks to everyone who replied! I appreciate the help and advice. One of the pinch bolts is broken!
