Man, I know how that feels, I highsided my Ultra back in October. I ended up with ribs broken in about a dozen different places, front and back, a broken shoulderblade, and a collapsed lung. It put me ina trauma hospital for 8 days. My son was on the back, and I thank the Lord he only had some bruising. You are right in saying that it could have been worse, I am so glad you and your wife are doing okay now! The scrapes on your fairing look just like mine! As for your helmets, toss them and get new ones. They should never be used again after having an impact!
At least your both ok. Bikes are replacable. Sounds like from the condition of your helmets it was a good thing you were wearing them. I hate the damn things myself but my wife makes me wear one.
