Most self service stations in the US require zip codes when you pay at the pump?
That's news to me and I live here. Haven't seen this in North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Montana, South Dakota, Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico, Nebraska, Iowa, California, Arizona, Iowa , Missouri and Arkansas.
Just about every gas station I go to here in Colorado, I have to put in my Zip Code for CC gas transactions
Oklahoma stations have nearly universally begun requiring the zip code, even in your home area. I use an amex card for daily charges, when it began only the amex required the pin and only at certain retailers, it has expanded to every retailer and visa/mc as well as amex.
Last time I was there is was called cash..........
I used to always use cash, too, until EVERY gas station up here began requiring you to PRE-PAY for a cash transaction. That means go into the store, wait in the line behind the shoppers and the people buying scratch-off tickets, give the guy at the counter a $20 bill to hold so he'll unlock the pump, go back out, pump your gas, go back in, wait in line again and hope the cashier gives you back your correct change. Call me old fashioned, but when a business starts a transaction by essentially saying, "I don't trust you," that's all the reason I need not to trust them, either.
As far as the Zip code thing, around here it seems to be only with certain brands/station ownership. Hess (now Speedway) has always required it. Stations owned by the Mirabito family (almost all other gas stations in this area) don't (yet). They (MIrabito) DO sell Ethanol-free premium, though (yay!).

Got "tattooed" pretty good one evening on a cash transaction ( out of town in Hicksville ) and took an hour and two cops to get my $50.00 bill back. Almost wound up in cuffs :>(
I've used this method a lot and it works. I find that near the border pumps don't seem to be programmed to ask, but the further away you get the more common it is.
