I pay at the pump and always use a credit card so thef is the bank's problem. Ultimately you won't lose with a debit card, but it can take a few days to get your account corrected. I've purchased thousands of dollars of fuel over the years by the way and have never had a problem.

I always go inside but only after pumping my gas. I don't buy anywhere that demands me to pre pay... I know that makes the list short but those are the places I like to deal with.

Pay at the pump. I have a low balance card that I use just for that.

My Mom always pays inside for me. She follows me in the car wherever I go
to make sure I ride OK...

she puts my gas caps in her purse

Card Skimmers are nothing new. 11 pages of people talking about purchasing gas. It must be winter. LOL

That is a great idea! I'm gonna go talk with my bank lady Monday!

I only started this thread as kind of a public service announcement , cause I had never heard of skimmers INSIDE the pumps. You're right, it's winter. hahaha.

At the pump but as time goes on I am thinking about changing my tactics. It is reaching the point where I will likely start using the CC and shelve the debit, ours has been replaced several times due to major companies data being hacked. Last thing I want is my account getting drained.

Even though the regulations went into effect, not all companies have it in place. Our service provider still is not able to support the new chip readers. Fortunately, all of our products are need based service items rather than wants which limits our risk. We're also a point of purchase transaction rather than internet sales and the majority of our phone transactions are with well known customers.

After Oct 1 2015, if a merchant hasn't updated their CC processing to use the new "chip" system, then they (the merchant) is liable for fraud. If a merchant has the newer equipment that reads the chip, then the CC issuer is still liable. This was an attempt to get merchants switched over quickly. But most smaller stores still don't seem to have the newer system. I'm sure it's the cost of switching over but they should realize they are on the hook for fraud until they switch over.
