Default New style Sears jack vs. old ?

This question is for owners of the new style Sears aluminum jack (yellow) especially those that also owned the old style (red) one:

In your opinion is the additional cost of the new style jack justified by increased performance or ease of use?

I recently purchased the old style one but have yet to even open the box much less try it out. What do you think? Take it back and trade up? Or will the old style work ok on my stock height '05 RK Classic? Comments please and thank you all in advance.

I have the old style red one, and I don't have any problems with it. It does the job just fine for me.

Sorry, no experience with the new one, took the old red one back after 2 months of use due to leakdown after 5 minutes. Bought another one from Manny, Moe and Jack....no problems.

I bought the old red one but it didn't fit under my '03 Fatboy. Therefore, I traded it in on the yellow one. I really like the ease of use with the new one but one thing that bothers me, it seems to lower the bike just a little too fast for my taste. I was wondering if you, or anyone that has the jack, gets the same feeling.

I've owned both... Had the older one for a while used it on my Yamaha 1600 Silverado and my 05 Ultra. Started having problems with it. It would _ever soooooo slowly_ lower down on it's own. Make sure you use the safety to keep it in place. Serveral times as it lowered, the safety was holding up the bike and the handle would just fall to the floor. The old one (Red) wouldn't fit under my Ultra unless I drove the bike up on about a 1" piece of plywood (front, rear wheels and one for the stand).

I took it back to Sears and they allowed me to pay the difference for the new one due to the lowering problem.

The new one has a couple of removeable rubber/metal pieces on the top. Without them in place, it rolls right under the Ultra. I find the lifting with the new one to be a little more difficult, but really not a big deal. Probably nothing more than leggs being much stronger then arms. However, the new one comes down very, Very, VERY fast unless you use a feather touch and I do mean feather when rotating the handle. (At least on mine, if I turn the thing more than 1/8 of an inch it comes down way too fast!!!!!!

Also, I think the Red older model was a bit wider, so it just seemed like it might have been a bit more stable. My bike seems to rock front to back a little more on the new one (like when I'm sitting in front of her, polising the wheels). Doesn't feel like she'll tip at all, but does seem like she rocks more.

IMHO always strap it down. The other nice feature of the new one (lighter and the safety lock engages automatically.

Joe

I have the older style red lift and have had no problems with it either. It does not fit perfectly under a Dyna, but that's a minor inconvenience for the most part, solved by pulling the bike up on a 2x6 to get enough clearance.

Hey Folks,

New to this forum, but was just looking over some of the more interesting subjects (to me that is!). I have the original red Sears jack, same one sold by many other vendors around the country, and I love the dam thing. I admit, the workmanship of the little Taiwan welders is not especially that perfect, but it holds up my Fatboy with no problems. One thing I found out pretty early, is that once you get it to the height that you want it to be, lower it slowly to engage the safety. I then do about a half a pump of the jack to take some of the load off the safety and start work. This stabilizes the jack tremendously. I have used this jack on several diffferent Harleys of my friend's with no troubles at all. It seems to do the job, and I got it on sale at Sears about a year ago for $100, so no complaints can be offered in regards.

I have the old red one and have had no problems with it yet. Got it on sale for $79.95. What's the price tag on the new one? Art
