Not sure why motorcyclists of all people get their pants in a wad about lane splitting. It affects no one else whatsoever and is safer for the rider. What the hell is the issue??? I'd much rather get through traffic than sit in traffic overheating and being rear ended by some idiot not paying attention.
It's a normal thing in California where people are used to it. I cannot understand why people are against lane splitting. Seems pretty whiny to bitch about it. Take your tampon out.
In California, where lane splitting is allowed, the Rider Safety Courses teach that its safer than sitting. Your biggest danger in stop-and-go traffic is being rear-ended.
BUT... you're only supposed to do it when traffic is completely stopped or moving very slowly, and at no more than 5 - 10 mph over the speed of traffic if traffic is moving.
I'd hate to have to schlep the King down between lanes with all the bumpy dots and stuff. Between the top-heavy and the crash bars being wide, I'll take the shoulder (illegal) or the high-occupancy lane (usually legal).
You are right in your statement that it should be only in slow moving traffice -- the guidelines that CHP has had for years was no splitting about 30 mph flow of traffic and in slower traffic nothing more that 15 above the speed of the slow moving traffic. They posted it on their website - and received several notices of legal action, since its not really legal, but its not illegal on the books either.
There is currently a bill that would allow splitting at a higher speed (50 mph flow of traffic?) Which I am totally against. I have witnessed bikes doing 78 or 80 splitting on busy freeways in the rain -- asking for trouble.
I think lane splitting should be allowed at the lower speeds and I do it when necessary on a full bagger.
